Are you a gun owner?

Would you like to own a firearm?

Now, after answering these questions ask yourself if you have adequately explained to your kids about gun safety.

Firearm-related injuries are the second most common cause of death of people under the age of 19.

Children need to know the dangers of guns and how to properly handle them especially if you choose to have one in your home.

The most important thing you can do is TALK. Have a meaningful discussion with your children about guns and gun safety.

Explain the difference between guns they see in video games and movies and guns in real life. If may surprise you how games and shows have desensitized the future generation.

Share how real-life guns cause real-life damage and casualties while guns on TV are only pretended. Teach your children to respect guns, help them understand the mystery behind what they are and what they can do.

Make rules with your children and explain the why behind your rules regarding guns. Tell them when and if they are allowed to handle the firearm. (For example, you may let them handle the firearm with approved adult supervision in an appropriate environment such as a soothing range.)

Be sure to teach the child what to do if they come across a gun inside or outside the home. Keep it simple and straightforward.

Such as...

-Stop what you are doing.

-Do not touch the gun.

-Leave the area.

-Immediately tell an adult about what they saw.

Overall it is important to create an environment where your children feel safe to ask questions about firearms. Have open and conversations about current events that are gun-related.

Of course, make your conversation age appropriate and be sensitive to your child.
